OFX/QFX File Import

Detailed guide to importing financial data files into JE-PFM.

The file import system is the primary way to get your financial data into JE-PFM. This guide covers the import process in detail.

Supported Formats

JE-PFM accepts two file formats:

  • OFX (Open Financial Exchange) — the open standard used by most financial institutions and personal finance software.
  • QFX (Quicken Financial Exchange) — Intuit's variant of OFX, functionally identical for import purposes.

Both formats are plain-text XML files that contain account metadata, transaction records, and balance information.

Import Steps

  1. From the dashboard or any account page, click Import Transactions.
  2. Select one or more OFX/QFX files from your computer. You can import multiple files at once — each file can contain a different account.
  3. JE-PFM parses each file and displays a preview showing the institution, account, date range, and number of transactions.
  4. Review the preview. Transactions that already exist (matched by FITID) are marked as duplicates and will be skipped.
  5. Click Confirm Import to store the new transactions.

What Gets Imported

Each transaction record typically includes:

  • Date — the posted date (and sometimes the transaction date).
  • Amount — the signed transaction amount (negative for debits, positive for credits).
  • Payee — the merchant or entity name.
  • FITID — the bank's unique transaction identifier, used for deduplication.
  • Memo — additional description text, when available.
  • Check number — for check transactions, when provided.

Account-level data includes the institution name, account number (last four digits), account type, and the balance as of the statement date.

Handling Errors

If a file cannot be parsed — for example, if it is corrupted or in an unsupported format — JE-PFM displays an error message describing the problem. Common issues include:

  • The file is a CSV, not an OFX/QFX file.
  • The file was truncated during download.
  • The file uses a non-standard OFX dialect that the parser does not recognize.

In these cases, try downloading the file again from your bank, ensuring you select the OFX or QFX format option.

Batch Imports

If you are setting up JE-PFM for the first time, you can import several months of files in one session. Select all files at once in the file picker, and JE-PFM will process them sequentially, deduplicating across all files.
