Budget Insights

Use JE-PFM's budget insights to understand spending trends and improve your financial habits.

Beyond simple progress tracking, JE-PFM provides insights that help you understand your spending patterns and make informed decisions about your budget.

The Insights tab on the Budgets page shows how your spending in each category has changed over the past three, six, or twelve months. A rising trend in a category like Dining might prompt you to increase the budget or cut back on eating out.

Category Breakdown

For any budget category, you can drill down to see which specific payees make up the total. For example, your Groceries budget might reveal that 60% of spending goes to one store. This level of detail helps you spot opportunities to save.

Over-Budget Analysis

When a category exceeds its target, the insights view highlights the transactions that pushed it over. This makes it easy to identify whether the overage was caused by a single large purchase or a pattern of many small ones.

Month-Over-Month Comparison

Compare any two months side by side to see where spending increased or decreased. This is useful after making a deliberate change — like switching grocery stores or canceling a subscription — to verify the impact on your budget.

Seasonal Patterns

Over time, JE-PFM builds enough history to show seasonal patterns. Utility spending tends to rise in summer and winter, holiday shopping spikes in November and December, and so on. Recognizing these patterns helps you set realistic budgets for each time of year rather than using the same flat target every month.

Using Insights Effectively

Review your budget insights at the end of each month. Look for categories that are consistently over or under budget and adjust your targets accordingly. The goal is a budget that reflects reality and helps you make conscious choices, not one that creates guilt every time a category goes red.
